Celebrating Scottish Heritage at Tartan Day in Fergus

Tartan Day is coming! Help us honour our Scottish roots and all other things Scottish by painting the town Tartan!

There will be bushels of events throughout the township of Fergus on the appointed day: Sunday, April 10. Fraberts Fresh Food kicks off the activities at 12:00 noon with the Kilted Kilometre. Starting at the Fergus Marketplace the kilometre continues down Queen Street West to Tower Street South, turns right on St. Andrew Street West, then right again on St. David Street South and finally returns to the market place. Fraberts will also provide fruit and drinks for all runners. And in case you were wondering, wearing a kilt is absolutely mandatory!

For those of you  less enthusiastic about running, there is a free historical Scottish walking tour will begin at 2:00 in the afternoon at the Fergus Public Library steps. This will be conducted by costumed historical story tellers and will provide a colourful array of stories of the history of Fergus.

The Bookery will be hosting psychic readings and giving henna tattoos for the adventurous throughout the afternoon.

And new for this year’s celebration, the Fergus Scottish Festival presents Seamus Gunn. Seamus will present “A declaration of a Free People,” a lecture hosted at the Fergus Library at 2:30pm (cost $10).

Let’s not forget the bairns! Roxanne’s Reflections Book Store will be featuring a craft time for the wee ones, and Seamus Gunn will be doing a children’s story at 2:30pm.

Scottish snacks and treats galore will be available at The Fergus Scottish Corner Shop and by wandering merchants. Fergie’s Fine Foods and Bentley House of Tea will be open and offering Scottish baked goods including fresh scones and shortbread.
