About the City of Guelph
The City of Guelph was founded in the 1820s by John Galt, the first superintendent of the Canada Company. Known colloquially as the Royal City, Guelph is situated on the banks of the Speed River and is located between the nearby cities of Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto.
Guelph is a well-known university town in Southern Ontario, home to the University of Guelph as well as a satellite campus of Conestoga College. The city is often rated as one of the top places to live in Canada, due to its low crime rates and low unemployment rates. The city’s economy is driven by its manufacturing sector, as well as agri-business and environmental management companies.
Over the past few decades, Guelph has become one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, with many new subdivisions being built in the South Guelph and West End neighbourhoods. The city’s historic downtown core continues to be a centre for business and the location of many restaurants, where residents can enjoy a night of fine dining.
Our History in Guelph
The story of our brokerage in Guelph began when Don Leaman and Joe Croft became partners in the early 1970s. In 1976, they changed the name of their partnership to Guelph Insurance. In 1979, a partnership with Sheridan Insurance Brokers was formed to help grow the operation.
Current team member Rick Reidt joined the organization in 1979. Rick became a partner in 1980 and managed the business until 1992, when The Ostic Group purchased it. Rick joined the leadership team of our brokerage and continues to work with us today.
In 1998, Milt Ball Insurance Broker was purchased and merged into our Guelph office. The recent acquisition of Steele & Steele Insurance Brokers in October 2013 completes the story.
