Ride for Dialysis 2015
The Ride for Dialysis is a yearly fundraiser where participants ride their motorcycles nearly 400km through the Muskoka, Algonquin and Haliburton Highlands areas to their final destination at Lions Camp Dorset. The event raises funds for the camp, which is specifically designed to cater to the needs of individuals with malfunctioning kidneys, providing access to regular dialysis treatments alongside traditional camp activities.
Dialysis treatment requires access to a machine for 2-3 hours every other day, which often prevents individuals on dialysis and their families from taking regular vacation. Lions Camp Dorset helps these people relax and take a week or two off, while still having access to the necessary medical care. The camp provides the following:
- 14 cottages
- 15 motel units
- 19 dialysis machines for campers
- Rec centre with an indoor pool
- Great waterfront
- Medical centre with full-time staff
The Lions Camp Dorset has been funded, built and maintained by Lions Club members across Ontario since 1978. As one of many fundraisers, the Ride for Dialysis has been a part of fundraising efforts, raising more than $150,000 in the past 10 years
This past September, the Ride for Dialysis raised $14,500 for Lions Camp Dorset. Our very own Jamie Ostic, who is also a Director of the Camp, rode in the ride. He started in Shelburne on the Friday, making stops to pick up friends in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. They then rode to Carnarvon and stayed at one of the riders’ water-access cottages. After riding all day in the rain on Saturday, Jamie had to attend the quarterly Directors Meeting at the Camp and he toured through the village of Dorset prior to arriving at the camp. He took a Go Pro camera along and took some video (except in the rain on Saturday). Watch the video below!
We hope you’ll join us for next year’s Ride for Dialysis! Contact Jamie at the Ostic Insurance Shelburne office for more information if you’d like to participate in 2016.
