If you can build leadership around you, you can make your community a better place to live.

That’s a sentiment Rob Murray has taken to heart.

Rob is the co-founder of Intrigue Media, a Guelph-based marketing company. He and Paul Demarco started Intrigue in 2006 in their third year at the University of Guelph. Initially it was a way of offsetting tuition costs, but Rob and Paul both believed in entrepreneurship and wanted to find something they could work on together.

Since then, Intrigue Media has grown to be a leading organization in the area, focused on helping local businesses get noticed and found in the community.

But Intrigue is much more than a marketing company. Their purpose is to empower leaders to strengthen the community. They empower their clients, leaders of not-for-profits, and their own team members to take on leadership roles within the community.

Intrigue is a big sponsor for St. Joseph’s Health Centre’s Taste of Guelph, and for Gourmet Trail (now called the Gourmet Restaurant Tour, a charity event for KidsLink). They believe that organizations like these build and bring a sense of identity to the community.

And Rob’s involvement in the community doesn’t end when he leaves the office.

Rob joined the Chamber of Commerce back when Intrigue was still in its infancy, and is now on the Membership and Marketing Committee. He’s also a big part of YPN—the Young Professionals Network— as part of its Steering Committee. There, he helps direct the content, location and format of the events, and invites young people to get involved.

Rob is also on the Board of Directors for the Foundation of the Guelph General Hospital, on the Grant Committee for the Guelph Wellington Business Enterprise Centre, and chairs the Leadership Lunch in Guelph. He’s also recently been asked to join the Foundation for the Grand River Conservation Authority.

Rob believes that being involved in the community and taking leadership positions means actively helping to promote, change and improve the community.

When Rob met Dave Silva at Ostic, he knew that he wanted to work with them. Their community-based approach and focus on taking care of people was a big reason for this: they’re the same values that Intrigue maintains. But Rob also liked that he got to meet the team face-to-face. Ostic is not a run-of-the-mill call centre, but a group of real people who care about their community as much as Rob does.

Since then, Rob has had insurance through Ostic for his home, car, boat and business. Now he can rest easy and focus on his mission of continuing to empower leaders in the community.
