Local Hero – AJ Broderick

 In Local Heroes

Broderick’s Apparel for Men and Fashion for Women is Fergus’ go-to store for quality apparel. AJ Broderick and his wife, Karalee, acquired the store from AJ’s parents in 2003, but this is only the most recent chapter in a story that dates back decades.

Since the 1940s, the store that would eventually become Broderick’s has been specializing in men’s wear. AJ’s father, Tom Broderick, began working in the store when he was 13 and knew right away that he had found his calling. In 1976 at the age of 23, Tom bought the store and changed the name to Broderick’s Clothiers. AJ was born shortly after and grew up playing and working in the family business.

When AJ and Karalee took over the family business in 2003, AJ wanted to continue running the business the way his parents had run it, with one exception. They knew the strong presence that Brockerick’s had in the community, but wanted to ensure future growth. To do this, he purchased the building next door and the store expanded into women’s fashion. Inside, the stores are connected to help make shopping more convenient for couples that make the trip together.

On top of helping the people of Fergus and surrounding communities on their hunt for quality men’s and women’s apparel, the team at Broderick’s loves to give back to the community that has supported them for decades. The store has been proud to participate in fundraisers in support of important community facilities like the new hospital and the expansion of the community centre.

In addition to fundraising, AJ volunteers as the Chair of the annual Fergus Antique & Classic Car Show. This show, put on by the Fergus BIA, allows car fans from around the province to take a walk down memory lane and enjoy live entertainment. It was through his work with the car show that AJ met Mike and Tom from The Ostic Group. As annual sponsors of the event, the team at the Ostic Group are involved in helping make this event a success. After getting to know the guys better, AJ felt that that they would be a good team to work with and to help with Broderick’s insurance coverage.

Working with the team at The Ostic Group allows AJ to focus on what he loves the most–supporting his community and making sure that men and women have access to quality fashion in their hometown.
