About the Town of Elora
The town of Elora was founded in 1832 by Scottish immigrants, who purchased land along the banks of the Grand River to build a new settlement. The town became famous for its historic mill, which was first converted into the Elora Mill Inn in the 1970s and then reopened in 2018 as a hotel, restaurant, and spa.
Along with the neighbouring town of Fergus, Elora’s location along the Grand River and its 19th century limestone architecture have made it a popular tourist destination in Southern Ontario. The town is surrounded by many beautiful hiking trails along the Elora Gorge and around the Elora Quarry, a popular swimming spot for locals.
The town is situated in Wellington County around 20 minutes from the nearby city of Guelph and 30 minutes from Kitchener-Waterloo. Among its other attractions, Elora is the location of the Grand River Raceway and plays host to Riverfest Elora, one of Ontario’s largest music festivals, in the summer.
Our History in Elora
Our Elora office can trace its roots back to 1907 when Sem Wissler was acting as an agent for Waterloo Insurance. Sem operated a law practice and insurance business in Elora until 1937, when he sold the insurance business to R. Rumble.
In 1927, James C. Fasken purchased the insurance business from Mr. Rumble and operated an insurance and real estate office in the town. Mr. Fasken moved the business to the current location on Metcalfe Street in Elora in the early 1950s.
Hugh M. Waind joined Mr. Fasken in 1953, eventually purchasing the insurance business outright in 1957. Hugh’s son Tom began working for the business in 1980. Hugh established strong community links in Elora, focusing on volunteer activities and strong customer service. Many of his clients are still our clients today.
Waind Insurance Brokers Ltd. operated until 1995, at which time Hugh and Ivan Ostic merged their respective businesses to form The Ostic Group Insurance Brokers. Today, Hugh’s son Tom Waind continues to live with his family in the Town of Elora and he is a key member of The Ostic Group team.
At The Ostic Group Insurance Brokers, we are proud of our involvement in the Elora community.
